As the Superbowl is going on, I’m noticing how healthy energy drinks are just like Championship football games.

These are champions. Everyone of them are pretty darn good. They give you energy. But champions, the best of the best, give just a little more. They give that extra bit. Like Payton Manning, lots of extra little bits that are starting to add up. Both teams playing hard.

In a healthy energy drink , yes, you get energy (and usually it lasts longer if it’s healthy energy) but you also get nutrients, antioxidants, focus, sharpness.

And then after the game, not matter who wins this Superbowl, then comes the end. The crash (or the rebuilding). A healthy energy drink doesn’t have that crash that leaves you feeling worse than you started, it actually leaves you up. And with a high antioxidant healthy energy drink, the antioxidants actually help your body start working on recovery. Antioxidants can help with inflammation.

A high antioxidant healthy energy drink also should rock. Like the Superbowl, and The Who. So, who are you?

Xe Energy.

What’s the difference between fruit sugar (or fructose) and refined sugars (or sucrose)?

Is there even a difference at all? After all they are both sugar, doesn’t that mean your body doesn’t care or notice the difference? Well there are some differences you should know about it. All sugars (and sugar substitutes) are not the same.

There are a bunch of scientific terms and explanations, but it basically comes down to glycemic index and nutrients. Plain refined sugar has been stripped of the nutrients and fruit sugar hasn’t. Glycemic index in it’s most simple explanation is how fast it gets absorbed by your body. (That’s not quite correct, but it will give you the idea behind it.) Your body works harder and slows down the absorption of the sugar when it is fructose (or natural sugar). That means it has a lower glycemic index (the lower it is the less negative impact it has on your body) It’s why diabetics are told to have low glycemic foods.

This is important, because sugar spikes are what happen if you get too much sugar in your body at once. Your body doesn’t know what to with it all. You get a short rush and then crash, because you can’t keep up with it. Your body is not meant to get it like that.

Sugar is an important part of energy drinks because sugar is what our bodies need to keep going. But our bodies use glycogen and glucose, not sucrose or even fructose. Glycogen comes from from glucose. Glucose is what your body uses right now. Glycogen is short term storage of glucose. It turns into that with the help of insulin (which your body makes properly unless you are diabetic or hypoglycemic. Too much insulin and you are hypoglycemic, too little you are diabetic). There is a limit to the amount of storage we have for both glycogen and glucose. If there isn’t enough space, it turns into long term energy storage (which is fat).

Fruit sugars break down into sucrose and glucogen, slowing the process. It spreads it out. Your body doesn’t even use the fructose unless there is an immediate need for energy and then it has to be processed by the liver. The rest is stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver.  Sucrose (or refined sugars) break down into glucose which spikes because it starts immediate insulin production. Basically fructose takes a longer route and keeps your body in balance and refined sugar (or sucrose) knocks it out of balance.

Fructose gives the same energy/calories, but keeps your body in sync, puts less stress on it and is healthier for you.

An energy drink ingredient, theobromine, found in Xe Energy from Xocai and in dark chocolate may be more effective than cough medicine according to a recent study.

Scientists, in research at Imperial College London and published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal, found that a key ingredient in dark chocolate and in the Xocai Xe energy drink was a third more effective than the leading medicine codeine in stopping persistent coughs.

Theobromine is one of the ingredients in the new Xe energy drink by Xocai. Theobromine also acts as a stimulant. It may be that the theobromine suppresses the vagus nerve which is responsible for causing coughing.

Theobromine may be a better choice for coughing, especially for people that use heavy machinery or who drive, since there doesn’t seem to be a side effect of drowsiness in fact just the opposite (which is probably why it is being used in the new Xocai Xe Energy Drink.

There are many over the counter cough remedies (many which have no evidence that they work at all). Millions are being spent on these every year.

The studies look promising, but more studies need to be done. Always, of course, consult with a doctor before you try anything for your health. Wouldn’t it be nice if someday your doctor prescribed you a chocolate or a tasty energy drink to get rid of you cough

Xocai is first to market with an energy drink using theobromine in their energy drink. Xocai is also the category creator of healthy chocolate.

One of the healthy energy drink ingredients we’ve been seeing lately is Maca Extract.

A Peruvian plant, Maca started to gain popularity in the early 2000′s. Maca became an ingredient commonly found in herbal aphrodisiac formulas, foods and energy drinks, of course. Maca is a root commonly used in the Andean region in South America, especially in Peru and Bolivia.

There are several studies about the aphrodisiacal (is that even a word) properties of Maca. Including studies about Maca extract helping men with mild ED and other sexual dysfunctions.

It has also been used to help women with menstrual pain and irregularities and conditions such as menopause. Some women find Maca extract helps to fight  symptoms of fatigue, hot flashes and anxiety associated with menopause.

Nice as all that is, what does that have to do with a smart energy drink? And why is it a healthy energy drink ingredient?

Well, Maca extract has also been found, in clinical studies, to help with memory. More studies need to be done (as usual in the science community) to get conclusive evidence, but Maca may help with memory impairment.

Maca  root, which looks kinda like a small, brown turnip, is rich in calcium, natural fiber, phosphorous, and iron is being used by everyone from the young to the elderly to boost energy levels and to increase physical stamina and performance. It is a natural food that also contains amino acids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and E and minerals, including zinc, magnesium and iron.

There are a number of steroidal glycosides present in Maca root and it is very rapidly gaining popularity with athletes, weight lifters and body builders. Maca extract seems to give more stamina and endurance in athletes, promote better mental clarity, and  it has been widely used as an aphrodisiac for both men and women.

So, what’s in this smart energy drink and why is it so good?

Antioxidants.
The first thing in there is, obviously, dark cacao. A few months ago the technology to make this drink did not exist. It also has Acai one of the top antioxidant fruits available. It also has a blend of super fruits including contains wild blueberry, grape, goji, raspberry, wild bilberry, cranberry, elderberry, apple, cherry, strawberry, and boysenberry.
Energy.
There is a blend of energy mobilizers that slowly bring up your energy and then take you through the steps. No crash and burn. Theobromine from the dark cacao is the main source of energy in the blend. Different than caffeine, it works on the muscle system and does not give you that jittery feeling. It takes a little longer to hit your system and stays a little longer. The other ingredients include: Ginseng to promote physical and mental energy and reduce stress, Maca known to help restore strength, regulate the endocrine system, and increase libido, Yerba Mate an all-natural source of caffeine that boosts the immune system, improves mood, and decreases hunger cravings, Guarana a healthy source of natural caffeine that increases memory retention and physical endurance and Quercetin a potent antioxidant and energy-enhancing nutrient. Quercetin is just starting to get some attention. Lab studies have shown cancer reducing properties and in fact there are some scientists that believe that it is the Quercetin in fruits and vegetables that are associated with reductions in cancer. Not enough studies to know for sure, yet. Quercetin also seems to promote a higher tolerance for exercise and increases in energy. One last thing, it also (in vitro) has shown reductions in fat cell production with certain combinations of antioxidants or flavanols!

This drink is 75% juice is carbonated with reverse osmosis carbonated water. Many soft drinks and energy drinks have phosphates which leech the calcium from our bones. Phosphates are not used in our carbonation.

It’s sweetened with Agave Nectar, a low glycemic sweetener, as well as the natural sugars in the fruits. There is no refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup, no harsh chemicals, no added synthetics, no artificial carbonation, no chemical names you can’t pronounce. It’s an all natural ingredient formula for unrivaled energy.

The ORAC score is 6701 and it has 744 mg of Flavanoids per can.
